Why I Had to Write This

This is not the book I thought I would write.

When the idea of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro first surfaced, I pictured a simple adventure story with a neat arc: training, travelling, climbing, summiting, celebrating. A mountain conquered, a dream fulfilled. Something crossed off my bucket list.

But life had other plans.

What unfolded instead was a story of interruption, resilience and return. It began with a medical emergency in the Serengeti – an ordeal that left me grounded, catheterised and facing surgery rather than the summit I had come for. That unexpected detour forced me to ask new questions: about health, about courage, about timing and about what really matters.

I decided to write this book because too many things happened that I couldn’t simply dismiss as coincidences. The way help arrived at exactly the right moments, the doors that opened when they should have been closed – it was all too precise, too timely. Some stories need to be remembered, passed on for family, friends and others to read. Mine is one of those stories – the kind that makes you pause and ask whether life is really just a string of coincidences, or whether there might be something more.

What I know is that I had to tell it.

This is my first book, and I have to say I’ve enjoyed the journey. I write as a husband, father, brother and friend who had his plans turned upside down in Africa and who discovered that the interruption gave the story its meaning.

My hope is that as you read, you’ll see echoes of your own story. Maybe you’ve had dreams interrupted, plans overturned, or health scares that reminded you how fragile life can be. Maybe you’ve wondered if you’d ever get another chance at something you thought was lost. If so, I hope this book encourages you.

I hope it stirs the adventurous spirit in you, prompts honest reflection about health and above all, helps you wrestle with the deeper question of what gives life its real meaning. With heartfelt thanks to everyone who shared this journey with me. This book is as much yours as it is mine.

What to Expect

The book opens with my story from the Serengeti – a moment when adventure turned into survival and everything changed. Looking back, I can see that along the way, there were countless moments of serendipity, coincidence, or something more. Except for one unmistakable occasion, I don’t stop to point them out. Instead, I leave it to you, the reader, to decide how many there are – and what they mean.

From there, the story circles back to where it all began – the spark of an idea, the first commitments and the setbacks that came before the climb. The journey then continues to unfold in sequence, carrying you step by step toward the summit of Kilimanjaro. Along the way, the Serengeti thread returns to be completed, tying the opening story back into the whole.

What follows is more than just a mountain story about climbing The Roof of Africa. It’s a story about interruptions and returns, about health and resilience, about family, friendship and the ripple effect of a dream shared.

Woven through all of it is the adventurous spirit – not reserved for mountaineers or explorers, but alive in anyone who dares to step beyond comfort, face a setback and keep moving forward.

And so, the journey begins, on a night in the Serengeti when everything changed.
